We visited Tuscany in November, and one of the highlights of our trip was the Gran Cru Tour at Castello di Brolio. I’d booked it hoping for a memorable wine tasting, but the castle, the history, and lunch made it feel like a whole afternoon out.
If you’re considering a Castello di Brolio wine tour, here’s what our visit was like and whether I think it’s worth adding to your Tuscany itinerary.
Why Visit Castello di Brolio?
Castello di Brolio sits in the Chianti Classico countryside near Gaiole in Chianti. The Ricasoli family’s connection to the estate dates back to 1141, so there’s much more to explore here than just the wine cellar.
One of the most interesting figures in the family’s history is Baron Bettino Ricasoli. He developed a formula for Chianti wine in 1872, helping shape the region’s winemaking history. I knew very little about any of this before our visit, which made hearing the stories while standing inside the castle especially interesting.
What Is the Gran Cru Tour Like?
Our private tour began at Brolio Castle. Our guide walked us through its history and the story of the Ricasoli family as we explored the rooms. He made a long history feel lively and easy to follow, even for someone like me who had arrived knowing almost nothing about it.
My favourite room was the armoury. It was one of those moments that reminded me we weren’t simply touring a winery; we were visiting a place where centuries of family history had played out.
Later, as we looked at the castle from outside, we noticed small holes in its facade. We guessed at what had caused them and got it completely wrong. Our guide explained that they were marks left during World War II. It was surprising to see such a visible piece of more recent history on a wine tour, especially after spending so much time hearing about the castle’s much older past.
From the castle, we continued through the estate and vineyards. By November, the grapes had already been picked, but the changing colours made the grounds beautiful in a different way. We could see how far the vineyards stretched across the hills, and I loved having time to take in the setting between stops.
Next came the winemaking facilities and the cellar. The moment that stuck with me most was stepping out of the elevator into the barrel storage area. Seeing the rows of barrels laid out in front of us was stunning.
The Wine Tasting and Lunch
Then came the part I’d been looking forward to most: the tasting. We tried a selection of Ricasoli wines in a private room, with our guide talking us through what we were drinking. After seeing the vineyards and cellars, tasting the wine felt like the natural finish to the tour.
We followed it with lunch at Osteria di Brolio, the estate’s restaurant below the castle. We enjoyed Tuscan food with wine pairings, and I had beef cheek for my main course. I probably wouldn’t have chosen it without a little encouragement, but it was delicious. Lunch gave us time to slow down and enjoy the rest of the afternoon.
How Much Does the Gran Cru Tour Cost, and How Long Should You Allow?
The Gran Cru Tour costs €170 per person and lasts about 2.5 hours, plus lunch. I’d leave 3.5 to 4 hours in your plans so you can enjoy the meal without rushing off to your next stop.
It’s definitely a splurge. But for us, the private tour, castle and cellar visit, wine tasting, and lunch made it worth the price. Is the Castello di Brolio Wine Tour Worth It?
For us, absolutely. At €170 per person, I wouldn’t recommend booking it if all you want is a quick glass of Chianti. Pricing is subject to change, this is what we paid at the time. We chose it because we wanted to spend time exploring the castle and estate, learning its history, and enjoying the wines over a proper Tuscan lunch. By the end, we were very glad we’d made room for it in our trip.

Tips for Planning Your Visit
Book ahead. We chose the Gran Cru Tour because we wanted the full experience. Check the current itinerary, availability, and what’s included before you reserve, particularly if lunch is important to you.
Leave room in your day. I wouldn’t squeeze this between several timed stops. The castle, tour, tasting, and lunch are much more enjoyable when you aren’t watching the clock.

Final Thoughts
I went to Castello di Brolio expecting a great wine tour. I left thinking just as much about the castle, the view across the vineyards, and that first glimpse of the barrel cellar. Lunch at Osteria di Brolio was a lovely way to end it.
If you have time for one memorable winery experience in Tuscany, the Gran Cru Tour is one I’d happily recommend.
