Where to Stay in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a country of endless adventure, but where you stay can completely shape your experience. From rainforest eco-lodges to beachfront resorts, choosing the right accommodation helps you dive deeper into each region’s unique vibe.
One thing to keep in mind: in Costa Rica, the sun sets around 6 PM every night — year-round. You’ll likely be spending a good amount of your evenings at your accommodation, so it’s even more important to pick a place you truly love!
In this guide, you’ll find the best places to stay in Costa Rica, organized by destination — whether you’re chasing waterfalls in La Fortuna, hiking cloud forests in Monteverde, or relaxing on sun-soaked beaches in Tamarindo.
Best Places to Stay in Liberia
Overview of Liberia
Liberia is the gateway city to the northwestern region of Costa Rica. While the city itself is more functional than flashy, it’s an ideal spot to launch your adventures or catch a flight home. Plus, it’s close to unique attractions like Pozas Los Coyotes, a hidden gem where you can float in stunning blue water.
I personally wouldn’t recommend touring around the city itself, but it is nice to stay as it’s close to a few different tour options. Most travelers use Liberia as a launch point, so staying near the airport is super convenient.
Recommended Stays in Liberia
We stayed at the budget-friendly Hotel Boyeros – although “budget” is relative here, as it was still a little pricey compared to what you might expect. That said, it was more affordable than many other options in the area.

The hotel had a great pool, good food, and strong AC (a must in this heat!). Plus, it’s located right in the town of Liberia, so we were able to walk around and explore. Since we were only staying one night, it was a convenient and comfortable choice.
Best Places to Stay in La Fortuna
Overview of La Fortuna
Nestled at the base of Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna is the ultimate destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers. Think jungle hikes, hot springs, waterfalls, and endless opportunities for adrenaline tours. It’s lush, lively, and packed with activities from morning to night.
Best Places to Stay in La Fortuna
We stayed at the mid-range option: Eden Deluxe (Airbnb), and it was an awesome choice — I honestly couldn’t recommend it more! It’s located close to La Fortuna but not directly in town, so if you’re looking for something walkable, this may not be the best fit. That said, it was perfect for us!
Rather than staying overnight at Tabacón, we opted for a day pass — and trust me, this splurge is absolutely worth it. The natural hot springs are beautifully designed and incredibly relaxing, with a range of pools nestled into the jungle. You also have access to the spa and on-site restaurant, making it the perfect place to unwind in luxury for the day. You really can’t go wrong here!

The Airbnb had a private hot tub, a small kitchen setup with a hotplate and fridge, and strong AC. You’ll be completely surrounded by jungle here, which made for an incredible experience. One morning, while sipping coffee provided by our host, we even spotted a sloth right in the tree in front of us! The host also offered guided night hikes, which was a really fun and unique bonus.

Pro Tip: Use Bounce to Store Your Bags
If you arrive before your accommodation check-in time (especially after an early flight or train), I highly recommend using Bounce. It’s a super handy app that helps you find safe, affordable luggage storage near transit stations, cafes, or hotels.
I use it all the time when I land early or have a few hours to explore before check-in. It’s available in most major cities worldwide, and it’s been a game changer for making the most of my arrival days!
✨ Bonus: You can book and pay right through the app, so there’s no hassle when you get there.

Best Places to Stay in Monteverde
Overview of Monteverde
High up in the mountains, Monteverde is famous for its mystical cloud forests and incredible biodiversity. It’s cooler here, with misty trails, hanging bridges, and the chance to spot rare wildlife like the colorful Resplendent Quetzal. It’s perfect for hikers, bird watchers, and anyone looking for a bit of magic.
Best Places to Stay in Monteverde
We stayed at the mid-range option: Eden Deluxe (Airbnb), and it was an awesome choice — I honestly couldn’t recommend it more! It’s located close to La Fortuna but not directly in town, so if you’re looking for something walkable, this may not be the best fit. That said, it was perfect for us!
If you’re looking for a more luxurious stay in Monteverde, Hotel Belmar is a fantastic choice. This eco-friendly boutique hotel is perched right in the cloud forest, offering stunning views, beautifully designed rooms, and a cozy yet upscale atmosphere. It’s known for its commitment to sustainability, its organic farm-to-table restaurant, and its peaceful setting — perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring.

This place is very similar to where we stayed in Monteverde which was absolutely beautiful!

Best Places to Stay in Tamarindo
Overview of Tamarindo
Tamarindo is one of Costa Rica’s most popular beach towns — known for its surf-friendly waves, colorful sunsets, and lively nightlife. Expect plenty of restaurants, souvenir shops, tour companies, and a buzzing atmosphere. It’s touristy, but still offers plenty of reasons to visit if you’re looking for convenience and energy.
Best Places to Stay in Tamarindo
We spent two nights at Cala Luna, and wow—what a dream stay. Tucked into the jungle just a short walk from the beach, this boutique hotel blends luxury and nature perfectly. The rooms were gorgeous, the outdoor showers were a treat, and the whole place had this peaceful, secluded vibe. We loved the farm-to-table restaurant on site (the cocktails were amazing!), and the staff went above and beyond with personalized touches. If you’re looking for a high-end spot that still feels eco-conscious and intimate, Cala Luna is a gem.

Best Places to Stay in Marbella
Overview of Marbella
If you’re craving peace, Marbella is your hidden paradise. This small, quiet beach town along the Pacific coast is all about laid-back local vibes, uncrowded beaches, and stunning sunsets. It’s a great base if you want to unplug, surf, or simply soak up the natural beauty away from the crowds.
Best Places to Stay in Marbella

We stayed at this Airbnb in Marbella for five days, and it completely exceeded our expectations. Honestly, the photos online don’t do it justice—it was even better in person. The space was beautifully designed, with a fully equipped kitchen, a BBQ area for outdoor dinners, an amazing pool, and excellent AC. It was just a quick five-minute drive to the beach, making it super convenient for sunset swims and surf sessions. One of the highlights? Waking up to flocks of parrots and toucans flying through the trees and ending each day watching the sun dip below the horizon—check out the photo below!
