Tucked away in the southwest corner of Alberta, where the Rocky Mountains meet the prairies, you’ll find one of Canada’s most underrated gems—Waterton Lakes National Park. Known for its dramatic mountain scenery, turquoise lakes, and abundant wildlife, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is like a smaller, quieter version of Banff—without the crowds but with just as much adventure.
Whether you’re looking to summit scenic ridgelines, kayak on crystal-clear waters, or simply relax and soak in the alpine views, Waterton offers the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and small-town charm. This 3-day itinerary is packed with the best hikes, photo-worthy stops, and cozy local eats to help you make the most of your time in this unforgettable pocket of Alberta.
Best Time to Visit Waterton Lakes National Park
The best time to visit Waterton is from late June through early September, when the trails are clear of snow, the wildflowers are in bloom, and most services in town are open. July and August offer the warmest weather and the widest selection of guided tours and activities, but they’re also the busiest months. If you prefer a quieter experience, early September is an excellent time—cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and golden larches starting to turn.
While the park is open year-round, many roads, trails, and accommodations shut down during the winter months, and services are limited from October to May.

Getting Around in Waterton
Waterton is a small, walkable town, and most trailheads and attractions in the park are just a short drive away. If you’re staying in town, you can easily walk to restaurants, shops, and even some trailheads like the Bear’s Hump. However, to access hikes like Red Rock Canyon or Cameron Lake, you’ll need a car.
There’s no public transit in Waterton, and rideshare options are limited, so having your own vehicle gives you the most flexibility—especially if you’re planning early morning hikes or sunset missions. Parking is generally easy to find, but it does fill up in the summer, so arriving early is a good idea.
Where to stay in Waterton:
Finding the right place to stay can really elevate your Waterton Lakes National Park experience—whether you want to be close to the trailheads, soak in the mountain views, or just enjoy the cozy charm of this lakeside village.
Prince of Wales Hotel – Iconic Luxury
If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind experience, the Prince of Wales Hotel is the place to be. This historic hotel is perched on a bluff overlooking Waterton Lake, offering jaw-dropping views and a touch of old-world charm. The rooms are cozy and classic, and the lobby alone is worth visiting for a drink or afternoon tea with a view. It’s definitely a splurge, but staying here feels like stepping back in time—with some of the best scenery in the park right outside your window.
🏞️Quick Tip
Even if you’re not staying at the Prince of Wales, pop in for a drink or high tea in the lobby—it’s open to the public and the view is unbeatable!

Waterton Lakes Lodge Resort – Mid-Range Comfort
This lodge is a solid mid-range option right in the heart of the Waterton townsite. It offers cabin-style accommodations, an indoor pool, fitness center, and even kitchenettes in some rooms—perfect if you want to cook your own meals after long days on the trails. It’s walking distance to shops, cafes, and the lake, which makes it super convenient.
Townsite Campground – Budget + Adventure
If you’re up for sleeping under the stars, Waterton’s Townsite Campground is a scenic and budget-friendly option. Located right near the lake and close to the village, it’s one of the most convenient campgrounds in a national park. You’ll fall asleep to the sound of the wind in the trees—and maybe even a few howling coyotes.
⛺Quick Tip
Campground sites fill up fast in summer—be sure to book early through the Parks Canada website or get a first-come-first-serve
Day 1: Welcome to Waterton: Bertha Falls Hike & Kayaking
Welcome to Waterton Lakes National Park ! It is a gorgeous place that is in my opinion highly underrated. Arrive in the morning and take some time to explore the charming Waterton townsite. Start your day with a coffee and breakfast at Pearls Café, a cozy local spot known for its mountain-town charm and hearty breakfast wraps.
Bertha Falls Trail
After settling in, head out for your first hike: the Bertha Falls Trail. This scenic out-and-back trail is around 5 km (3 mi) round trip and takes you through fragrant forest to a beautiful cascading waterfall — a perfect warm-up hike to ease into your Waterton adventure.
🐻 Quick Tip:
Bring bear spray — this is grizzly country! While sightings aren’t common, you should always be prepared on the trails.

Kayak or SUP on Upper Waterton Lake
After the hike grab some lunch and cool off with a kayak or standup paddle-board rental on Upper Waterton Lake. Paddling on the glacier-fed waters with the mountains towering above is a magical experience. If you’re feeling adventurous, paddle over to the lakeside bluff near the Prince of Wales Hotel for an unbeatable view from the water.
⛵Quick Tip:
Waterton Shoreline Cruise Co. also offers rentals — or hop on a scenic boat tour if you’d rather stay dry!

Watch the sunset from the bluff at the Prince of Wales Hotel — you don’t have to be a guest to enjoy the view! Then grab dinner at The Lakeside Chophouse, an upscale-casual with lake views, steaks, and local dishes. Great ambiance for a relaxing dinner, and get ready for the adventure tomorrow!
Day 2: Crypt Lake Adventure
Today is all about experiencing one of Canada’s most iconic hikes — Crypt Lake. This bucket-list trek is consistently ranked as one of the top hikes in the country, and for good reason. From waterfalls and ladders to a cave tunnel and alpine lake views, this hike delivers nonstop adventure.
Start early with a strong coffee and breakfast at Lakeside Chophouse, which has a great morning menu and lake views. You’ll need to fuel up for the hike!
⏰ Quick Tip:
The shuttle fills up fast in high season — book tickets in advance or arrive early to grab your spot!

Getting to the Crypt Lake Trailhead
The trailhead isn’t accessible by road — instead, you’ll hop on a 15-minute boat shuttle operated by Waterton Shoreline Cruise Co. that departs from the marina.
During peak season (late June to early October), there are two morning departures (typically 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM) and two afternoon returns (4:00 PM and 5:30 PM). The early departure is ideal if you want more time on the trail without feeling rushed.

🎟️ Quick Tip:
The early boat (8:30 AM) gives you more time for the hike and ensures you’re not rushed — it’s the best choice for a relaxed pace with photo stops and a scenic lunch at the top.

What to Expect on the Hike
The Crypt Lake Trail is about 17.2 km (10.7 miles) round trip with around 700 m (2,300 ft) of elevation gain, and it typically takes 6–8 hours to complete. It’s rated as moderate to challenging, with a few exciting features that make it extra memorable:
- A steel ladder scaling a cliff wall
- A narrow tunnel you’ll crawl through (bring a flashlight or phone light!)
- A breathtaking ridge trail overlooking sheer drop-offs
- And finally, Crypt Lake itself — an emerald alpine lake backed by towering rock faces near the U.S. border
The variety on this hike makes every kilometer worth it, and the views at the end are truly unforgettable.

Not Up for Crypt Lake? Try These Instead:
If a full-day hike isn’t quite your thing, Waterton still has you covered with scenic and less demanding options:
- Lower Rowe Lake Trail – This moderate 7 km round trip hike offers a peaceful, less-trafficked trail through dense forest and alpine meadows, ending at a serene, mirror-like alpine lake. It’s great for those who want a quieter hike with stunning views but without the intensity of Crypt Lake, with an elevation gain of 300m.
- Cameron Falls Viewpoint – A short walk right from town to a roaring waterfall — great for early risers or sunset watchers.
- Waterton Lake Scenic Cruise – Sit back and relax on a narrated boat tour that gives you amazing views of the surrounding peaks and lakefront.
After this epic day, grab dinner at Thirsty Bear Kitchen + Bar. The cozy atmosphere, local brews, and bison burgers make it a great place to refuel and relax.
Red Rock Canyon + Alderson Trail or Go Horseback Riding
Start your morning off with a more upscale experience, enjoy breakfast with panoramic views of Upper Waterton Lake at the Royal Stewart Dining Room at Prince of Wales Hotel before headed to the canyon.
Red Rock Canyon
After breakfast do the scenic drive out to the iconic Red Rock Canyon — about 25 minutes from town along the Akamina Parkway. This unique red and green banded canyon is an easy and beautiful spot to explore. Walk the short loop trail along the rim and across footbridges, or dip your toes in the cool stream that runs through the rock. It’s the perfect low-effort, high-reward morning after two active days.
🚗 Red Rock Canyon fills up fast!
Arrive early in the morning for the best parking and fewer crowds.

Go Horseback Riding
Book a guided ride with Alpine Stables, where you’ll wind through forested trails, open meadows, and scenic ridgelines. Rides range from an hour to half-day adventures. It’s a peaceful and unique way to see more of the park — without having to lace up your boots again!
But if you’re craving another hike try Alderson Trail!
Hike the Alderson Trail
If you’re still craving trail time, set off on a partial out-and-back hike along the Alderson-Carthew Trail. Starting from town, this route takes you into quiet alpine terrain with the chance to reach Alderson Lake if you’re up for the distance (approx. 16 km round-trip). It’s less busy than the park’s other headline hikes and offers serene views and solitude.
Final Thoughts
Waterton Lakes National Park may be one of Alberta’s lesser-known gems, but it packs an incredible amount of beauty and adventure into a compact, charming destination. From epic hikes like Crypt Lake and scenic drives through Red Rock Canyon to tranquil moments kayaking on the lake or sipping coffee in town, it’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down and savor every view.
Whether you’re here for the mountain trails, wildlife encounters, or cozy small-town atmosphere, Waterton offers the perfect mix of rugged adventure and peaceful retreat. It’s a place that leaves you feeling refreshed, inspired, and already planning your next visit.
