Why Visit Waterton Lakes National Park

Tucked away in the southwest corner of Alberta, Waterton Lakes National Park is one of Canada’s best-kept secrets. A rugged, romantic escape where mountains crash into crystal-clear lakes. Less crowded than its famous cousins Banff and Jasper, Waterton offers all the natural wonder with a more peaceful, intimate vibe.

We spent three unforgettable days hiking, kayaking, and soaking in panoramic views, and trust me, if you’re planning an Alberta road trip, you don’t want to skip this gem. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, conquering iconic trails like Crypt Lake, or just craving lakefront relaxation, this 3-day Waterton itinerary has everything you need to explore one of Canada’s most magical national parks.

Getting to Waterton Lakes National Park & Best Time to Visit

How to Get to Waterton Lakes National Park

Waterton is located about three hours south of Calgary, Alberta, and just a short drive from the U.S. border with Montana. If you’re flying in, Calgary International Airport (YYC) is the most convenient hub, with easy access to rental cars for your drive to the park.

Once you hit the open road, expect scenic views the whole way. You’ll travel through wide-open prairies, rolling hills, and eventually, into the dramatic mountain landscapes that signal your arrival in Waterton Lakes National Park. Cell service gets patchy the closer you get, so download offline maps ahead of time.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Waterton?

The best time to visit Waterton Lakes National Park is from late June through early September. During these summer months, the mountain trails are clear of snow, wildflowers blanket the meadows, and nearly all local services and accommodations are fully operational.

July and August bring the warmest weather and the widest range of guided tours, shuttle access, and outdoor activities. However, they also come with the largest crowds. If you’re seeking a quieter, more relaxed experience, early September is ideal. You’ll enjoy cooler temperatures, fewer visitors, and a stunning landscape as the golden larches begin to turn.

Although the park remains open year-round, many roads, hiking trails, and accommodations shut down or reduce hours during the winter months. From October through May, expect limited services, early snowfall, and closures of key attractions, so plan accordingly if you’re visiting off-season.

Getting Around in Waterton

One of the best parts of visiting Waterton Lakes National Park is how small and accessible the townsite is. Once you arrive and park your car, you can pretty much explore everything on foot or by bike. The entire village is walkable, with easy access to shops, restaurants, the lakefront, and several trailheads right from town.

Some of the best hikes in Waterton, including Bertha Falls, Bear’s Hump, and the Lakeshore Trail, all start within walking distance of the town centre. It’s perfect for those who want to hit the trails without needing to drive each day.

For attractions further out, like Red Rock Canyon, the Akamina Parkway, or the Crypt Lake shuttle, having a vehicle is helpful. Parking is generally free but can be competitive during the busy summer months. If you’re visiting during peak season, consider getting an early start or using park shuttles where available.

Cell service can be limited in the park, especially in remote areas, so we recommend downloading offline maps and trail apps ahead of time.

Day 1: Hike to Bertha Falls, Kayak the Lake & Catch a Sunset

Welcome to Waterton Lakes National Park ! It is a gorgeous place that is in my opinion highly underrated. Arrive in the morning and take some time to explore the charming Waterton townsite. Start your day with a coffee and breakfast at Pearls Café, a cozy local spot known for its mountain-town charm and hearty breakfast wraps.

Bertha Falls Trail

If you’re up for a bit more of a challenge, continue on to Bertha Lake, a turquoise alpine gem surrounded by rugged peaks. The full hike clocks in at 10.4 km (6.5 miles) round-trip with a steeper incline, but the views (and a cold lake dip) are more than worth it.

🐻 Quick Tip:
Bring bear spray – this is grizzly country! While sightings aren’t common, you should always be prepared on the trails.

Kayak or SUP on Upper Waterton Lake

After the hike grab some lunch and head to the marina. Rent a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard to explore Upper Waterton Lake. Paddling is one of the best ways to experience the park’s dramatic shoreline, with its soaring cliffs, hidden coves, and chances to spot deer, eagles, or even bears from a safe distance.

The water is cold year-round, but on a sunny summer day, you might still be tempted to jump in.

Waterton Shoreline Cruise Co. also offers rentals – or hop on a scenic boat tour if you’d rather stay dry!

🎟️ Quick Tip:

Crypt Lake Viewpoint

Hike the Legendary Crypt Lake Trail

The Crypt Lake Trail is about 17.2 km (10.7 miles) round trip with around 700 m (2,300 ft) of elevation gain, and it typically takes 6–8 hours to complete. It’s rated as moderate to challenging, with a few exciting features that make it extra memorable:

  • A steel ladder scaling a cliff wall
  • A narrow tunnel you’ll crawl through (bring a flashlight or phone light!)
  • A breathtaking ridge trail overlooking sheer drop-offs
  • And finally, Crypt Lake itself – an emerald alpine lake backed by towering rock faces near the U.S. border

The variety on this hike makes every kilometer worth it, and the views at the end are truly unforgettable.

Don’t forget to pack layers, snacks, and plenty of water, and be mindful of the return boat time — most hikers aim to be back at the dock by 4:00 or 5:00 PM to catch one of the final shuttles.

Not Up for Crypt Lake? Try These Instead:

If Crypt Lake isn’t your thing, this Waterton National Park itinerary also includes gentler trails perfect for a more relaxed experience. Waterton Lakes National Park has plenty of easier hikes and scenic trails that still deliver unforgettable views and a dose of adventure.

  • Lower Rowe Lake Trail – This moderate 7 km round trip hike offers a peaceful, less-trafficked trail through dense forest and alpine meadows, ending at a serene, mirror-like alpine lake. It’s great for those who want a quieter hike with stunning views but without the intensity of Crypt Lake, with an elevation gain of 300m.
  • Cameron Falls Viewpoint – A short walk right from town to a roaring waterfall — great for early risers or sunset watchers.
  • Waterton Lake Scenic Cruise – Sit back and relax on a narrated boat tour that gives you amazing views of the surrounding peaks and lakefront.

These trails are great options for families, beginner hikers, or anyone wanting to explore Waterton at a slower pace. They also make excellent choices for a rest day if you’re staying in the park a little longer.

Dinner and a Well-Earned Rest

After conquering Crypt Lake, you’ve earned a hearty dinner and some downtime. Grab dinner at Thirsty Bear Kitchen + Bar. The cozy atmosphere, local brews, and bison burgers make it a great place to refuel and relax.

If your legs are still holding up, enjoy an evening stroll along the lakefront trail or grab dessert to-go and relax back at your accommodation.

Day 3: Red Rock Canyon, Scenic Drives & a Relaxed Wind-Down

Start your morning off with a more upscale experience, enjoy breakfast with panoramic views of Upper Waterton Lake at the Royal Stewart Dining Room at Prince of Wales Hotel before headed to the canyon.

Red Rock Canyon

Ease into your final day with a scenic drive along the Red Rock Parkway, one of the most beautiful roads in the park. The 15 km route winds through rolling foothills and vibrant wildflower meadows before arriving at Red Rock Canyon, a striking natural formation of layered red and green argillite carved by rushing waters.

The canyon itself has a short, family-friendly loop trail (just under 1 km) with footbridges and photo ops galore. If you’re up for more exploring, you can also hike the Blakiston Falls trail nearby – an easy 2 km return walk that leads to a scenic waterfall.

🚗 Red Rock Canyon fills up fast!
Arrive early in the morning for the best parking and fewer crowds.

Optional: Horseback Riding or Relaxing Brunch

Book a guided ride with Alpine Stables, where you’ll wind through forested trails, open meadows, and scenic ridgelines. Rides range from an hour to half-day adventures. It’s a peaceful and unique way to see more of the park- without having to lace up your boots again!

But if you’re craving another hike try Alderson Trail!

Optional: Hike the Alderson Trail

If you’re still craving trail time, set off on a partial out-and-back hike along the Alderson-Carthew Trail. Starting from town, this route takes you into quiet alpine terrain with the chance to reach Alderson Lake if you’re up for the distance (approx. 16 km round-trip). It’s less busy than the park’s other headline hikes and offers serene views and solitude.
